Mafraq City
Mafraq city is located in the northeastern part of the Kingdom, 68 km north of the capital Amman. It is the center of the governorate, which has an area of 26,663 m². It is a transitional zone between two different environments: the semi-desert badlands in the east and the Mediterranean basin environment in the west. Mafraq is considered one of the richest governorates in the Kingdom for its diverse archaeological sites spanning from the ancient Stone Age to the end of the Ottoman era. Mafraq was historically known as Al-Fadin, meaning a fortified castle. It was later named Al-Mafraq due to its location at the intersection of international roads connecting Jordan with Syria, Iraq, and Saudi Arabia. Al al-Bayt University in Mafraq has been a beacon of knowledge for the people of the governorate, the nation, and the Islamic world.
