Applied Geography

About the Department

The Department of Applied Geography at Al al-Bayt University was established in the academic year 2019/2020. It awards a Bachelor’s degree in Applied Geography and is considered the first program of its kind in Jordan. The specialization focuses on practical and field-based applications, relying on modern technological tools such as Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Remote Sensing, and the Global Positioning System (GPS).

The idea of establishing the department emerged in response to the growing need for applied geography graduates in both the public and private sectors, amid increasing demand for applied disciplines that align with labor market requirements. This has been reflected in the rising number of students enrolling in geography programs, in addition to the department’s distinctive practical and applied tracks that contribute to building advanced professional skills and enabling graduates to compete effectively for job opportunities across various fields.

The department includes a modern GIS laboratory used for teaching practical courses and training students on the latest geographic technologies, as well as supporting faculty members’ scientific research. The department also aspires to establish a specialized Remote Sensing laboratory in the coming years to further strengthen its educational and research infrastructure.

In line with its future vision, the Department of Applied Geography seeks to launch a Master’s program in Applied Geography that keeps pace with contemporary scientific and technological developments, serves national development needs and labor market demands, and contributes to preparing qualified research and professional cadres capable of employing advanced geographic technologies in planning, resource management, and sustainable development.

The department includes faculty members holding diverse academic ranks: A full professor,            an associate professor, two assistant professors, and four full-time lecturers.

As part of the Department of Applied Geography’s commitment to keeping pace with scientific and technological developments in the fields of modern geography and geospatial sciences, as well as strengthening its academic programs and expanding opportunities for postgraduate study, the Department has established the Master’s Program in Applied Geospatial Sciences, with instruction scheduled to commence in the 2026/2027 academic year.

The establishment of this program represents a qualitative addition to the Department’s academic offerings, as it provides a modern interdisciplinary specialization that integrates geospatial applications, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Remote Sensing, and Artificial Intelligence. The program is also designed to prepare specialized scientific and research professionals capable of meeting the evolving needs of the labor market, advancing scientific research, and contributing effectively to community service.
