Department of Applied Earth and Environmental Sciences

About the Department

Welcome to the official homepage of the Department of Applied Earth and Environmental Sciences at Al al-Bayt University. The department is dedicated to academic excellence, offering comprehensive Bachelor's and research-based Master's programs (Thesis Track). For the 2022/2023 academic year, the department serves a vibrant community of approximately 200 undergraduate students and 25 graduate students.

Academic progression is structured around rigorous credit requirements, with the Bachelor's degree awarded upon the successful completion of 132 credit hours and the Master's degree granted after 33 credit hours. The department is led by a distinguished faculty of 10 PhD holders specializing in various disciplines of Earth and Environmental Sciences. The department also includes teaching assistants and four laboratory supervisors and technicians.

The curriculum is uniquely designed to emphasize practical and applied learning, reflecting the critical importance of geological and environmental studies and their direct impact on humans and the environment. Since its establishment, it aims to train and qualify students to recognize various geological and environmental aspects, with a focus on the geology and environment of Jordan, through field applications and laboratory work.

To support this mission, the department maintains several specialized scientific facilities, including the Rock and Mineral Optics Laboratory, Engineering Geology and Soil Laboratory, Hydrochemistry and Geochemistry Laboratory, Geophysics Laboratory, and a specialized Rock Workshop. The scientific equipment available in the department includes: optical and digital microscopes, electrical resistivity and magnetic surveying devices, a spectrophotometer and flame photometer, chemical and biological oxygen demand meters, an acoustic frequency device for measuring surface water depths, and a particle size analyzer.

Therefore, the Bachelor's program in Earth and Environmental Sciences is one of the important applied programs at Al al-Bayt University, dealing with the following basic topics: minerals, rocks, industrial rocks and geochemistry, structural and engineering geology and field applications, geophysics, surface and groundwater sciences, environmental sciences, and stratigraphy and fossils.

Department Head's Word

The Applied Earth and Environmental Sciences major was established in 2000. Given the importance of the subjects studied by the student in this major in many fields, and because of their direct impact on humans, the environment, and natural resources, this program has been distinguished by its practical and applied aspects.

The program aims to prepare highly competent students by developing their skills and knowledge to keep pace with developments and changes in earth sciences. It also focuses on enhancing cooperation with the community and all governmental institutions and research centers concerned with earth and environmental sciences.

The department provides an outstanding level of education through continuous review of the study plan and focusing on practical subjects. Over the past years, the department has worked to prepare and graduate specialists with high cognitive competence and practical experience in the field of specialization from all Bachelor's and Master's stages.
