The Department of Biological Sciences is one of the main departments of the Faculty of Science. It was established in the 1994/1995 academic year with the establishment of the Faculty of Science. The department covers all major fields of biological sciences, including ecology, botany, zoology, biochemistry and molecular biology, genetics, microbiology, and biotechnology. In addition, undergraduate students are required to take some compulsory courses offered by the Departments of Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics, and Computer Science.
The Department of Biological Sciences offers both bachelor's and master's degrees and has graduated hundreds of students at both the undergraduate and master's levels. The bachelor's program aims to prepare highly competent graduates specialized in biological sciences who are capable of contributing to the application and dissemination of knowledge in the field. It also aims to enable students to engage in continuous professional development and achieve their career and professional development goals. Furthermore, the program seeks to familiarize students with the optimal use of the technologies and tools available in the department, encourage continuous self-learning after graduation, and strengthen the university's links with the medical and industrial sectors.
The master's program offers both thesis and coursework options. The program has been designed with sufficient flexibility to allow students from the Departments of Medical Sciences, Medical Laboratory Sciences, Public Health, and Agriculture to enroll. It aims to encourage basic and applied research in the field of biological sciences, with a focus on research that contributes to national development. The program also seeks to equip master's students with the knowledge, skills, and professional attitudes necessary for excellence in postgraduate studies and scientific research, while developing a spirit of independence and initiative and fostering a culture of quality, continuous development, and excellence.
