The Geographic Information Systems and Remote Sensing Department represents the aforementioned discipline of Earth and Environmental Sciences in research and teaching. The department grants a Bachelor's degree in Geographic Information Systems and Remote Sensing and a Master's degree in Geographic Information Sciences.
The department is looking forward to having more academic programs, activities, and local, regional, and international participation, which reflects positively on supporting and developing the local community, serving the nation, and advancing towards research and scientific development.
Welcome to the main page of the Department of Geographic Information Systems and Remote Sensing (GIS & RS). We are part of the Faculty of Earth and Environmental Sciences (FEES). The department is distinguished by being the only one among Jordanian universities that teaches GIS and Remote Sensing at the Bachelor's level. Fortunately, we have recently started a Master's program in Geographic Information Sciences to be a distinctive qualitative addition to this field of knowledge.
The department's scientific research policy is built on two important pillars. The first is meeting the needs of the local market (public and private) for GIS requirements and technologies at various planning levels (strategic, tactical, and operational). Accordingly, many distinguished researches have been conducted in critical areas such as crisis and disaster management, urban planning, agriculture, supporting critical infrastructure networks, hydrology, as well as providing effective scientific solutions to environmental problems, pollution, desertification, and many others.
The second is integrating modern and advanced technologies specialized in the knowledge fields of GIS and RS into the academic plans of both the Bachelor's and Master's programs. Key examples include specialized courses in aerial photography techniques using drones, laser remote sensing, microwave remote sensing, building advanced geographic databases, and programming in remote sensing and GIS.
What has been briefly mentioned here does not cover all aspects of excellence in the GIS and RS department. We still have much more to tell you about, such as the excellence of our faculty members, laboratory supervisors, and administrative staff, in addition to the excellence of our graduates in terms of scientific knowledge and professional qualification, of which we are proud.
