The Department of History at the Faculty of Arts and Humanities, Al al-Bayt University, was established in the academic year 1994/1995, coinciding with the establishment of the University. The Department began its academic journey with the Islamic Arab History Program, with a primary focus on the study of history, the analysis of historical sources, and the critical study and preservation of cultural heritage as core areas of teaching and scholarly research.
In line with ongoing academic development, the evolving requirements of higher education, and quality assurance standards, the Department has developed its academic program, which is offered under the title “History and Civilization Program” starting from the academic year 2026/2027. This development expands the scope of study beyond historical events to encompass the analysis of civilizational transformations and their intellectual, social, political, and architectural dimensions.
The Department seeks to prepare qualified specialists in historical and civilizational studies, develop students’ research, analytical, and critical thinking skills, and integrate modern methodologies and digital technologies into the study of history. Through these efforts, the Department aims to contribute to scholarly knowledge and serve society.
Praise be to Allah, Lord of the Worlds, and may peace and blessings be upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
It is my pleasure to welcome you to the Department of History at Al al-Bayt University, which was established with the founding of the University in 1994 and has since continued to fulfill its academic mission in the field of historical studies through teaching and scholarly research. The Department is committed to promoting an understanding of history as a fundamental field of knowledge for examining the development of societies and their civilizational transformations.
Building on this role, the Department offers the academically enhanced “History and Civilization Program,” which approaches the study of history within an integrated intellectual framework that brings together the chronological dimension of the human experience with its civilizational, intellectual, social, and political dimensions.
The program encompasses four principal areas:
· Ancient History: The study of the emergence of ancient societies and civilizations, their political, social, and cultural development, and their historical and archaeological sources.
· Medieval History: The study of political and civilizational transformations, the development of states and institutions, and the scientific, intellectual, and cultural contributions that shaped the course of civilizational interaction.
· Modern and Contemporary History: The analysis of the emergence and development of the modern state, political, economic, and social transformations, the evolution of international relations, and major issues influencing the contemporary world.
· Civilization Studies: The study of the civilizational achievements of societies in the fields of intellectual thought, architecture, the arts, political and administrative systems, economic structures, and tangible and intangible heritage, thereby fostering an integrated understanding of the interaction among people, the environment, and society throughout history.
Through its academic expertise, the Department is committed to developing students’ critical thinking, historical analysis, and scholarly research skills, as well as their ability to critically examine sources and authenticate documents. This enables students to employ modern scholarly methodologies in the study of history and civilization and prepares them to pursue postgraduate studies and engage in relevant academic, research, and professional fields.
The Department of History is committed to continuous academic development, enhancing the quality of teaching and scholarly research, and strengthening the role of historical and civilizational studies in advancing knowledge and serving society, in alignment with the mission and strategic directions of Al al-Bayt University in education, research, and innovation.
Welcome to the Department of History, where we strive to build rigorous historical knowledge and prepare researchers equipped with the tools of analysis and critical inquiry, capable of reading the past with scholarly awareness, understanding its impact on the present, and envisioning the future.
