Surveying and geomatics engineering explores the representation and visualization of the space we live in and use, whether on land, underwater, or even in outer space, to facilitate the design and execution of various engineering projects with the highest accuracy, in the shortest time, at the lowest cost, and with the greatest safety. It is a science that has been linked since ancient times to human needs and well-being on both individual and collective levels.
To achieve this, the geomatics engineer uses modern technologies to collect and analyze information, employing computers and satellites for surveying and measuring geographic and spatial data. This includes specializations such as surveying (buildings, land, roads, etc.), cartography, remote sensing, the Global Positioning System (GPS), Geographic Information Systems (GIS), and others.
Surveying engineering is a term incorporating the field of land surveying along with many other aspects of land development, construction surveying, and spatial data analysis and management. Following the advanced developments in digital data processing, the nature of the tasks required of the professional land surveyor has incorporated cutting-edge technology in satellite image processing, digital photogrammetry, remote sensing, satellite-based global positioning, geographic information systems, drone-based mapping, laser scanning, surveying, and digital mapping.
There are a wide variety of jobs available to a surveying engineer in the design, development, and operation of systems for mapping information about the land, the oceans, our natural resources, and man-made features. In addition, students in this program can collaborate with other engineering and geoscience disciplines.
Overall, the department, through its academic programs and research activities, is preparing students to respond to the pressing needs of developing, protecting, improving, sustaining, and mitigating the various components of our developing infrastructure and the natural environment at the national and regional levels.
Vision
The Surveying Engineering Department becomes the preferred destination for students, researchers, and academics in the field of surveying engineering and geospatial information systems at the local and regional levels.
Mission
- To provide university education and high quality in the field of surveying engineering in Jordan.
- To conduct high-level research projects in accordance with national and international standards and contribute to sustainable development.
- To disseminate and share accumulated knowledge and experiences to be used to solve problems and enhance the potential of the community and relevant sectors.
- To ensure continuous improvement of both the quality of infrastructure and human resources necessary to meet educational and research requirements and public service responsibilities.
