About the Program
The Department of Applied Geography at Al al-Bayt University was established in the academic year 2019/2020 and awards a bachelor’s degree in Applied Geography. This specialization is the first of its kind in Jordan, as it focuses on the applied aspect and fieldwork, relying on modern geographic technologies such as Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Remote Sensing, and the Global Positioning System (GPS).
The establishment of the department came in response to the growing need for graduates of Applied Geography in both the public and private sectors, amid the increasing demand for applied specializations that keep pace with labor market requirements. This has been reflected in the rising enrollment of students in the program, as well as its distinction through applied practical tracks that contribute to building advanced professional skills and enable graduates to compete effectively in various fields.
The department includes two modern GIS laboratories used for teaching practical courses, training students on the latest geographic technologies, and supporting scientific research for faculty members. The department also aspires to establish a specialized Remote Sensing laboratory in the coming years, which would further enhance its educational and research infrastructure.
In line with its future vision, the department seeks to introduce a master’s program in Applied Geography that keeps pace with modern scientific and technological developments, meets the needs of national development and the labor market, and contributes to preparing research-oriented and specialized cadres capable of employing advanced geographic technologies in the fields of planning, resource management, and sustainable development.
The department comprises a distinguished group of faculty members with notable contributions to research, teaching, and community service, holding various academic ranks that include one full professor, one associate professor, two assistant professors, and four full-time lecturers holding doctoral degrees. Since its establishment, four cohorts have graduated from the department bachelor program.
