The Faculty of Science was established in 1994 with the launch of the university. It was initially known as the Faculty of Arts and Sciences and was the largest faculty in the university, as it included the Computer Department and the Education Department at that time. The faculty later separated and became known as the Faculty of Science in 2005. The faculty includes four departments: Mathematics and Actuarial Science, Physics, Chemistry, and Biological Sciences. These departments offer five undergraduate degrees and four master’s degrees.
The faculty is concerned with following up and updating teaching plans and methods across all departments using modern technology. The faculty has been equipped with modern computer laboratories. It aims to provide the scientific environment necessary for education, research, and teaching in various scientific fields, prepare qualified graduates in the above-mentioned scientific disciplines, and keep pace with the latest scientific developments in these specializations.
To achieve these goals, the faculty has attracted qualified teaching staff, established several advanced laboratories in chemistry, physics, and biological sciences, expanded admissions at both the bachelor’s and master’s levels, and supported the faculty with administrative staff and laboratory supervisors.
Overview of the Departments, Laboratories, and Research Fields
Department of Mathematics:
The Department of Mathematics is one of the departments of the Faculty of Science. It began offering bachelor’s programs alongside the Computer Department at the beginning of the 1994–1995 academic year. The department aims to meet society’s needs for specialized and qualified personnel capable of teaching mathematics, statistics, and actuarial sciences. In the 2011/2012 academic year, the department included 21 faculty members of various specializations and academic ranks.
The number of students reached 556 undergraduate students in Mathematics, 25 undergraduate students in Actuarial Science, and 41 master’s students. Since its establishment until the beginning of the 2011/2012 academic year, the department graduated 1,230 students in Mathematics, 65 students in Actuarial Science, and 79 master’s students in Mathematics and Statistics.
Department of Physics:
The Department of Physics was established in 1994 with the aim of providing society with scientific personnel capable of contributing to scientific development by preparing qualified experts able to teach physical sciences and their practical applications in industry and various work and production sectors in the country. The department includes seven laboratories for training students in various branches and applications of physics.
The department contributes to activating and encouraging scientific research, as it includes faculty members specialized in theoretical physics who produce internationally recognized research. The department also includes two modern research laboratories where faculty conduct practical research, with master’s students (8 students in the 2011/2012 academic year) participating in research implementation. The number of undergraduate students in the 2010/2011 academic year reached 392 students, taught by 10 faculty members specialized in different fields of physics, in addition to a group of laboratory supervisors and technicians.
The department continuously updates its teaching and research laboratories to keep pace with developments in the field. It obtained special accreditation from the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research for the 2011/2012 academic year.
Several scientific activities are also conducted annually, such as organizing lectures and scientific seminars delivered by specialized professors. Numerous studies are conducted in areas such as electrical, electronic, optical, and magnetic material properties and radiation physics. Additionally, theoretical research is conducted in mathematical physics, condensed matter, and nuclear physics, with the participation of professors and master's students, often in collaboration with professors from other Jordanian universities. Furthermore, faculty members participate in many scientific and national committees as well as international conferences. The department is preparing to expand its laboratory infrastructure, faculty members, and various scientific activities.
Department of Chemistry:
The Department of Chemistry was established in 1994-1995 with the aim of participating in providing the country's needs of trained scientific personnel in the field of chemistry, and teaching chemistry on sound and modern foundations, so as to keep pace with the rapid development witnessed by chemistry at the international level. The department also aims to qualify students for fruitful work in academic, industrial, and research fields inside and outside Jordan. One of the department's objectives is also to establish an applied research center and conduct studies that have a direct impact on the industrial and environmental sectors in Jordan. The department is currently completing its requirements for equipment and teaching and research laboratories. The number of faculty members for the 2011/2012 academic year reached 13.
